The best time to visit Abisko
Abisko changes more between seasons than most places in Sweden. The aurora season runs from late August to April, the sun stays below the horizon for a month around Christmas, and from late May it does not set at all.
Abisko sits at 68 degrees north, on the southern shore of Torneträsk. The light swings from round-the-clock daylight in June to a month without sunrise in December, and the tours follow it. Aurora trips need darkness, snowmobile routes need snow and frozen lakes, and the summer is for walking. This page goes through the year in the order most visitors plan it, starting with the aurora.
Late August to November
The first aurora sightings of the season come in late August, once the nights get properly dark again. On 1 September 2027 civil twilight ends at 21:26, and by 1 October it ends at 19:06. Kiruna Lapland, the official tourist board for the municipality, notes that September, October and March often bring the strongest displays. The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) puts the best chances later, from mid-November to mid-March, when the nights are longest.
Several tours are built for this window. Lights Over Lapland runs an autumn chase in October and November, with stops on the shore of Torneträsk or in the mountains near Björkliden. Guests have reviewed Experience Abisko's small-van chase from September onwards. Outback Abisko offers an autumn night walk through the birch forest near Björkliden up to the bare mountain, and a short Sámi culture tour with tastings at a reconstructed settlement and a walk along the Abiskojåkka river.
The Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja opens for evening visits on 19 October 2026. In November the days shorten quickly: the sun is up for about seven hours on 1 November and for about two on 1 December. The snowmobile tours on this site list departures from December only.
December and January
From 6 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 the sun does not rise above the horizon in Abisko. It is not dark all day, though. On 21 December civil twilight lasts from about 09:09 to 14:16, a few hours of blue light that our page on the polar night describes in detail. For aurora watchers this is the longest stretch of darkness in the year, and Kiruna Lapland notes that the lights can appear from about 16:00.
December is when the winter activities start. Outback Abisko runs its panorama snowmobile tour from Björkliden from December to February and the longer route along the Kungsleden trail to Lake Abiskojaure from December to March. An aurora dinner in a cabin above Björkliden runs from 18 November to 15 March. Drivers should know that winter tyres are compulsory in Sweden from 1 December to 31 March whenever there is snow, ice or frost on the road.
February to April
Daylight returns fast after the polar night. On 1 February the sun is up for almost six hours, on 1 March for nearly ten, and by the spring equinox on 21 March for more than twelve. The ski areas open in February, once the dark period is over: in 2027 Björkliden from 4 February and Riksgränsen from 18 February. The daytime chairlift to the Aurora Sky Station runs from 13 February to 26 April 2027, and the evening season ends on 27 March.
For a first visit this is a good compromise. There is daylight for snowmobiling, ice climbing and snowshoeing, and still enough darkness for the aurora until early April. The Kiruna Snow Festival, a free event in the centre of Kiruna, about 93 km away by road, takes place from 27 to 30 January 2027 for anyone who wants to add a day in town.
April is the driest month in Abisko, with a normal of only 11.4 mm of precipitation for 1991–2020 according to SMHI. Over the year the station records a normal of 347 mm, the lowest of any in Sweden.

May to August
From about mid-May the nights stay light, and the aurora season is over. The sun stays above the horizon from 25 May to 19 July 2027. Riksgränsen keeps its winter season open until 23 May 2027 and advertises May skiing in the bright nights. In Abisko National Park the river delta of the Abiskojåkka is closed to visitors from 1 May to 31 July to protect nesting birds.
Summer is hiking season. The Kungsleden trail starts at STF Abisko Turiststation, and the first stage to the Abiskojaure huts is 14 km, about four to five hours on a wide, easy path. The Aurora Sky Station reopens on 14 June 2027 with daytime lift rides until 27 September and evening visits under the midnight sun until 18 July. Abisko.net runs short husky walks from its kennel, which so far have been held mainly in July and August.
Choosing your dates
If the aurora matters most, aim for mid-November to mid-March and stay at least three or four nights, since no month can promise clear sky. For the polar-night atmosphere and the longest dark hours, come between early December and early January. For a mix of daylight, snow and aurora, February and March are the safest choice. For midnight sun and hiking, choose June or July. Once you have dates, the sample itineraries show how to fill the days and the page on what to wear helps with packing.

Questions travellers ask
When is the best month for the northern lights in Abisko?
The Swedish Tourist Association names mid-November to mid-March as the period with the best chances. Kiruna Lapland points out that September, October and March often bring strong displays. Clouds decide more than the month, so allow several nights.
Can I see the northern lights in summer?
No. From roughly mid-May to early August the sky never gets dark enough, and between 25 May and 19 July 2027 the sun stays above the horizon around the clock.
When does the snowmobile season start?
The snowmobile tours from Abisko and Björkliden on this site list departures from December. The panorama tour from Björkliden runs from December to February, the longer route to Lake Abiskojaure from December to March.
When do the ski areas in Björkliden and Riksgränsen open?
In February, after the dark period. Björkliden lists its winter and skiing season 2027 from 4 February to 2 May, and Riksgränsen its winter season from 18 February to 23 May.
Is the Aurora Sky Station open all year?
No. It has a winter season with evenings from 19 October 2026 to 27 March 2027 and a summer season from 14 June to 27 September 2027. In between the station is closed.
